Math Club Activities

The Department’s Math Club plays an important role in forming interactions between the department and students, and generating interest in mathematics.  It is attended by all that have an interest in mathematics.  Please find a description of our Math Club below.

  1. Mission.  To encourage and support the study of mathematics, research, and fellowship.
  2. Activities.  In addition to holding meetings once a week and holding occasional weekend activities, Math Club also sponsors events such as:
  • Math Competition. Math Club prepares a student team to compete in the annual national mathematics challenge competition.  This effort has had a very positive impact in generating interest in mathematics.  Many of our team members have subsequently gone on to undergraduate courses in mathematics or statistics.

  • Presentations.  Club members are encouraged to present at Math Club.   There is little restriction on the types of presentations that can be given.  A presentation can be on a mathematical or statistical problem that a student has found interesting, an overview of a mathematical or statistical specialty, a historical fact about mathematics, a recreational mathematics problem, or to provide information on mathematical or statistical careers, to name only a few.

  1. Research.  Activities of Math Club often lead to research presentations. Many Math Club students have presented the school at regional or national conferences.

  1. Conferences and Seminars.  Math Club makes students aware of upcoming seminars and conferences.

  1. Service.  Math Club members often lend their manpower and expertise to help support

  1. Social Activity.  Some events are just for fun.
